Weekend trip to Riederalp and the Aletsch Glacier, Switzerland
Stefan had a singing and hosting gig on Friday night at the cultural festival in the village Riederalp so Karin the kids, Maurice and I accompanied him for the weekend. The weather was a bit unpredictable so instead of riding we took Karin's car for the 4 hour drive.
On the way to Alp we took a short cut through the Furka tunnel on the car train(about 15kms).

On the cable car with the luggage. |
We parked the car at Moral and caught the cable car up to Riederalp.
Nearly to the top! |
Taxi from the cable car to the chalet. The village only has electric cars. |
The Matterhorn. |
We had great view from the balcony of the the hotel including a view of the Matterhorn (4478m) in the distance.
We had a great night at Stefan's show listening to three different artists. They had gone to a lot of effort to set up the large marque and stage, all having to be transported up by the cable car.

You can see the four lifting cables for transporting cargo. |
After working on the Friday night Stefan had the Saturday off so we all went up to see the huge Aletsch Glacier. Wow what a sight! This is one of the natural wonders that we have hundreds of photo's of but none can do it justice and some just don't look real.
If it wasn't for Stefan & Karin we would never have seen some of the amazing scenery.

The intrepid travellers and the Aletsch Glacier. |
The view from 2333m. The glacier is 1km wide & 1km deep. The experts say that all the Swiss glaciers are melting due to global warming so 20 years ago they would have been even more amazing.
To see the glacier we had to go up yet another Gondola lift, the Moosfluh (2333m) and then we walked across to the chair lift, Hohfluh (2227m), back to our chalet (1925m).
Even the cows are patriotic in Switzerland!
So all good things must come to an end but in this case even the drive home was spectacular. Instead of the car train we drove over the Flurkapass, OMG what a road.

Up |
and up |
and down |
then down some more |
and up some more |
around & around |
a few beautiful little towns just for a change |
Oh look another mountain and another glacier. |
down one more mountain & up another! |
